Tutor Briefing Seminar 2009

On Wednesday 23 September, around forty design educators gathered at the RSA. Much of the day's proceedings were recorded and are available here for you to listen.

The morning session addressed the findings of two pamphlets commissioned and published by the RSA design team in June 2009. The session was designed to allow tutors to respond to these and engage in a broader discussion on the current and future direction of design education.

The morning began with an introduction by RSA Director of Design, Emily Campbell who then introduced Chris Downs, co-founder of Live|Work, who gave a response to the two publications.

There then followed small group discussions (not recorded). The final plenary session chaired by Lesley Morris from the Design Council, and which was recorded, began with a summing up by the facilitator of each of the small discussion groups.

The afternoon session (also recorded) began with an overview by Emily Campbell on the developing broader RSA design programme and, in particular, how it pertains to two Design Directions projects specifically this year.

There then followed a series of presentations on a number of the briefs for 2009/10, some of which had powerpoint presentations. Where these are available, there are links below:

Professor Michiel Scheffer from Saxion University spoke about the Digitex brief.

Ian Drysdale, thinkpublic - gave a general presentation on public participation and some of the general principles of working with individuals and communities

Jamie Young, a member of the RSA design team, gave a general presentation about design and behaviour change and how this developing area is explict in two of this year's Design Directions projects (although an approach that could be applied in several others also)

Lesley Morris from the Design Council spoke about the Design for Social Inclusion brief and Dott Cornwall

Revital Cohen spoke about the Body and Mind brief

Professor Lorraine Gammon presented the Design out shoplifting brief. She also distributed a handout
