1999 marked the 75th anniversary of the Student Design Awards. This scheme has successfully matched the needs of education and industry over the past 75 years by setting annual projects which are challenging and realistic. This report details the research carried out by the RSA on the relevance of student placements in industry today, asking such questions as:
- do student placements still have a valid role in the education process at the end of the 20th century?
- how do companies value placements?
- are there models for new ways of working?
