Chair - Marco Steinberg

Marco SteinbergMarco is Strategic Design Director at the Finnish Innovation Fund (Sitra). Current projects include Helsinki Design Lab (www.hdl2010.org) and Sitra’s sustainable development challenge in Jätkäsaari, www.low2no.org. Prior to Sitra, Steinberg served (1999-2009) as a Professor at the Harvard Design School where his work focused on developing strategic design processes.  This work included leading the Stroke Pathways project: a strategic redesign of the stroke care delivery system, aimed at identifying strategic improvements in care (www.strokepathways.org).

Marco Steinberg is an active participant in numerous national innovation programs including being a member of Italy’s Lombardy region’s “Meta­district” committee, advising government on SME funding to promote industry’s competitiveness through design research.

Revital Cohen

Revital CohenRevital Cohen is a designer who develops critical objects and provocative scenarios exploring the juxtaposition of the natural with the artificial. Her work spans across various mediums and includes collaborations with scientists, bioethicists, animal breeders and the NHS. As a research associate within the Design Interactions department at the Royal College of Art, she is currently working on a self initiated project investigating genetics and nanoparticles, supported by a Wellcome Trust Art Award. 
Since graduating from the RCA in 2008 she has been exhibiting and lecturing within varied contexts and locations - from scientific and academic conferences to art galleries and design fairs. 


Ivo Gormley

Ivo is a Head of Media at thinkpublic. Ivo has directed media and research projects aimed at increasing participation in public services ranging from healthcare and education to social care. He has lead projects for organisations such as the Design Council, the Alzheimer's Society and the Young Foundation and has presented his work internationally. Ivo has worked in the public sector for four years since graduating with an MA in Social Anthropology. Ivo continues to combine an interest in social innovation with documentary; his 2008 documentary Us Now was broadcast around the world and is being translated into 24 languages, his latest film Playmakers was screened at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in 2009. Ivo's work has been screened to governments world-wide including the French National Assembly, The Hague, the European Union, The Houses of Parliament (UK) and Washington DC. Ivo is founder of the social enterprise The Good Gym and is a Trustee of the charity Art Against Knives.


Gitta Gschwendtner

Gitta GschwendtnerBorn in Germany in 1972, Gitta Gschwendtner moved to London in the early nineties to study design at Central Saint Martins, Kingston University and the Royal College of Art. Following graduation from the RCA furniture MA  in 1998 she set up her independent design studio for furniture, interior design, exhibition design and public art projects for cultural, arts and corporate clients. Gitta Gschwendtner’s studio focuses on conceptually rigorous, visually intriguing, functional designs across several disciplines.


Dr Lynne Maher

Lynne MaherLynne is Interim Director for Innovation, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and leads work on innovation specifically focusing on the design and redesign of health services and processes to support the NHS. She has a particular focus in open innovation bringing learning from service design and other industries to inspire the NHS.
Lynne is a member of the Innovators Council formed by the Cabinet Office, a Fellow at the Health Service Management Centre, Birmingham University and a Fellow of the RSA. She is a reviewer for the British Medical Journal and Institute for Health Care Improvement for papers and abstracts. Lynne is an advisory board member for two health programmes at the Design Council and is also part of the faculty for Kaiser Permanente’s Improvement Leaders Course, USA.


Matt McGrath

Matt McGrathMatt founded Aircraft Medical Ltd (June 2001, Edinburgh), to develop and market his winning RSA Design Directions design, Laryngoscope. The company has since won numerous national awards for design and advancing medical technology. Their lead product is the McGrath® Series 5, the world's first fully portable Video Laryngoscope. Across all production Aircraft Medical now manages a 100 strong team in the UK. Aircraft’s design team works closely with leading anaesthetists, paramedics, infection control nurses, and trainee graduates across the world to develop its equipment. More than 5 years of extensive international research lead to the company signing a distribution contract in 2006 valued at $50 million for the McGrath® Series 5. In November 2006 Scotland’s Entrepreneurial Exchange awarded Matt McGrath the title of Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year.

Julia Schaeper

As a service designer, Julia employs design methodologies in health with a focus on developing new approaches that improve the patient’s experiences of care. She won national awards both for design and social business ideas, is a Fellow at the RSA and has lectured on service design at several universities across Europe.
