Chair: Andrew Summers
Andrew
Summers is Deputy President of the RSA and was previously Chief Executive
of the Design Council. He now works as chairman, board member and
advisor to companies and governments worldwide. His background is in the
food industry, where he was Managing Director of Sharwood’s.
His current appointments include Chairman of Design Partners, the government-backed
body which promotes UK design internationally, and board member of the
Small Business Service. He also acts as a policy advisor to the
Department of Trade & Industry, the Department of Culture Media &
Sport and to the Hong Kong and Philippine governments.
Mark Adams
Brought
up in the world of Habitat’s rise to dominance, Mark Adams' education
was inspired by evolutionary biology and ended with a qualification as
a zoologist. A fascination with the way things are made and evolved led
him to establish the furniture company, Vitsœ, in London in 1986
following an introduction to Niels Vitsœ and the designer, Dieter
Rams. On the retirement of Niels Vitsœ in 1993, Adams became managing
director of Vitsœ in Germany and, two years later, he transferred
the corporate seat and the production of Rams’ 606 Universal Shelving
System to Britain. Vitsœ now sells directly to customers around
the world including in New York and Los Angeles with the leading retailer,
Moss.
Mark Wilkinson
Described
by idFX magazine as the Finest Designer of our Times, Mark has
created a huge portfolio of products. He is a Fellow of the RSA and Fellow
of the Chartered Society of Designers and is best known for furniture
design, particularly kitchens, having developed a design, manufacture
and retail business with showrooms throughout the UK.
Founder of Mark Wilkinson Furniture and co-founder of Smallbone, Mark is highly respected in the kitchen industry, being the only person to win both of its top awards – the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Special Achievement Award.
Mark regularly writes for publications covering the design and the kitchen industry and provides articles for the country’s leading newspapers and consumer magazines.
Mike Woods
Mike
Woods is a Creative Director at Tangerine in London. He has 12 years of
professional experience, working with clients in Europe, the US, Asia
and the Middle East. His work has won design awards in the UK, Germany
and the USA and has been widely published in books and design journals.
Mike is also a visiting lecturer at various universities in the UK. For the last 6 years, Mike has been a RSA Design Directions judge and has recently been a juror with the Audi Design Foundation and the DBA Inclusive Design Challenge.
Martin Woolley
Professor
Martin Woolley is Director of Research at Central Saint Martins College
of Art and Design. With an early background in three dimensional and industrial
design, his research interests have broadened to encompass design-related
aspects of the innovation process. More recently he has moved into a research
project management role, initially as Director of the HEFCE/TLTP funded
'demi' Project which established web-based learning and teaching resources
for UK design courses. He is currently principle investigator on the E.U.
Framework 5 'AGORA Cities for People' project and on the 'Emotional Wardrobe'
Designing for the 21st Century EPSRC/AHRC cluster project. He has continuing
international research collaborations with several universities. Martin
has been active on many national and international research bodies, and
is currently on the Design Research Society Council and the Design Education
Association (DEED) executive. He was also the academic consultant to the
Design Council's web-based, 'Knowledge Cell' project.
