This brief was developed by Professor Lorraine Gamman and Professor Martin Gill. Lorraine Gamman is Director of the Design Against Crime Research Centre at Central St Martins School of Art and Design, is the business crime lead for the DTA. She directs the Design Against Crime Research Centre linked to a practice-led design research agenda and the understanding that design should address security issues without compromising functionality and other aspects of performance, or aesthetics. In everyday language, secure design has to be user-friendly whilst abuser-unfriendly; but it doesn't have to look criminal or even ugly.
Professor Martin Gill is Director of Perpetuity Research and Consultancy International a spin out company from the University of Leicester. The company specialises in the areas of security management, risk management, crime and crime prevention. Martin has been actively involved in a range of studies relating to different aspects of design and crime prevention, including in the retail sector. He has published widely (13 books and over 100 articles including 'Managing Security' and 'CCTV' published in 2003, and the 'Handbook' of Security' published in 2006).
