Design out shoplifting
reviewing the dark side of shopping
Retail businesses, especially retail outlets, are currently reporting increased incidents of shoplifting linked to the recession. The most recent British Retail Consortium Crime Survey for 2007/8 placed customer theft as one of the three most important concerns.
This brief asks how strong design can contribute to the reduction of opportunities for shop theft.
Make sure you check out the Resources link below for support material. Also, please join the NING that has been created to support this project:
· it allows members (tutors and students) to access extra resources that help define the problem of shoplifting (articles, media, videos, reports) and provide examples of how good design has been used to solve similar crime related problems
· it gives members the chance to open discussion topics, to share ideas and resources
· it provides the opportunity for collaboration on projects/submissions and the development of groups (or teams)
· it encourages students and tutors to interact about designing out crime, leading to more inventive solutions and a better understanding of the brief
The NING has been created by the Design Council.
This project is open to undergraduates, postgraduates and those in the first year following graduation.
