GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Internship

Value: £7,500
Duration: 16 weeks
Location: Weybridge, Surrey

At GlaxoSmithKline we have a challenging and inspiring mission: to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. This mission gives us the purpose to develop innovative medicines and products that help millions of people around the world.
Headquartered in the UK and with operations based in the US, we are one of the industry leaders, with an estimated seven per cent of the world's pharmaceutical market.
As a company with a firm foundation in science, we have a flair for research and a track record of turning that research into powerful, marketable drugs. Every hour we spend more than £300,000 (US$562,000) to find new medicines.
We produce medicines that treat six major disease areas – asthma, virus control, infections, mental health, diabetes and digestive conditions. In addition, we are a leader in the important area of vaccines and are developing new treatments for cancer.
The Consumer Heathcare side of the business is growing rapidly with sales up 14 percent at nearly 3.5 billion pounds for 2007.

Many of the brands in the CH portfolio are among the market leaders:
- over-the-counter medicine sales grew 20% to £1.7 billion, with Panadol up 14%  to £262 million and alli sales of £150 million since launch in the USA in June
- dental products such as Aquafresh and Sensodyne
- smoking control products Nicorette/Niquitin
- nutritional healthcare drinks such as Lucozade, Ribena and Horlicks

The GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare internship will enable the winning student to spend a period of time working in the Aquafresh Science Academy of GSK's Oral Healthcare Centre of Excellence. The student will be attached to an ongoing project that will involve packaging design and will be encouraged to work as part of a multidisciplinary team comprising packaging designers, technologists, marketing experts and scientists. There will be scope provided for the student to use the comprehensive PacXperience Studio facilities including a 3D printer and SolidWorks CAD system.
